About Sodium Metabisulfite, its Physical and Chemical Properties

Sodium Metabisulfite has the chemical formula Na2S2O5 and its molecular mass is 190.107 g/mol. It is a sulfur-containing ionic substance of sodium. Sodium has a favorable cost while metabisulfite (S2O52-) has a negative charge. Metabisulfite is required as a result of the presence of 2 Sodium atoms. Meta terms explain the straight bond present between 2 Sodium atoms. It is a well-known antioxidant used in pharmaceuticals. It is white in color and has a strong powder form. We know that the chemical formula of Sodium Metabisulfite is NA2S2O5. It has two sodium atoms, two sulfur, and five oxygen atoms. Na+ is balancing the charge in the structure. sulfur atoms are directly affixed to others from a single bond. A sulfur atom which has three oxygen atoms, has an oxidation state of +5. One more sulfur atom has an oxidation number of +3.


There are many methods available to synthesize sodium metabisulfite preservative. One of them is by using Sodium sulfite and sodium bisulfite solution.

In the solution, There is a balance in between the ions as revealed below:

2HSO32- ⇌ S2O2-5 + H2O

When NaOH is contributed to the above solution, free Na+ ions develop with bisulfite ions and Sodium metabisulfite is accomplished. It improves the formation process per cycle and more return of Sodium Metabisulfite is achieved.


Physical Properties

•It is white in color, strong, and in powder form
•It has a comparable odor to Sulfur dioxide
•The molar mass of sodium metabisulfite is 190.107 g/mol
•It has a melting point of 1800C, however, it decays around 1500 C
•When steamed, It decomposes easily.

Chemical Properties

•sodium metabisulfite pH is preserved at 4.6 while preparing the option. So, it is acidic.
•When it is treated with strong acids, it releases SO2. The response is shown listed below:
•2HCL + Na2S2O5 ⇌ 2SO2 + 2NaCl + H2O.

•It acts as a reducing agent in the dough, it helps in making batter softer, simpler to work.
•It is a widely known antioxidant used in pharmaceuticals.
•It is used in industries as deterioration prevention because it is an oxygen scavenger.
•It is used in wastewater treatment as it is a good degreasing agent.
•It is used as a sterilizing ingredient, to clean up the devices of winemaking.
•It is extensively used in make-up and skincare products. Because of its antibacterial properties, it is used in sanitizers. The use of sodium metabisulfite is also increased
